Artist vs Civilian
Artist/Civilian is a preparatory technique that I created 15 years ago for actors to get the instrument operating on all cylinders.
Simply put - it prepares the instrument to work.
Before we begin the work of the actor and the character, we must prepare the instrument. And, the actor’s instrument, is the soul, spirit, core or diaphragm. It is the only instrument in the arts that is invisible, therefore making it more difficult to pinpoint what is needed to create or perform. The actor’s instrument must be open and ready and accessible. It needs to operate on all cylinders for its effective use. The artist must be ready to share their fear, anger, anxiety, shame vulnerability, resentment,regrets, vengeance, love, passion, etc., without judgment – but freedom. The civilian's nightmare – but the artists' buffet.
